How to Remove Snails and Algae from Aquarium Plants Using Reverse Respiration

Aquarium plants make your tank look great but can also bring in unwanted pests like snails, algae, and parasites. Many cleaning methods, like bleach or hydrogen peroxide, can harm plants or leave chemicals that might hurt your fish.

A safer way to clean plants is reverse respiration. This method uses carbon dioxide (CO2) to eliminate snails and algae without chemicals. It’s safe and easy and even helps your plants grow better.

Use this method to remove snail eggs.

Why Use Reverse Respiration?

Unlike chemical treatments, this method:

  • Removes snails, eggs, algae, and parasites completely.

  • Uses only CO2, so no harmful residue is left behind.

  • Improves plant health, making them look greener and stronger.

  • Is cheap and easy to do at home.

How to Do It:

1️⃣ Submerge Plants in Fresh Seltzer or Club Soda

Use freshly opened, unflavored Seltzer or Club Soda with no additives. Place plants in a container and pour enough liquid to cover them entirely.

2️⃣ Ensure Complete Immersion

Use a small weight to keep plants fully submerged. Stir gently to release trapped air bubbles so the CO2 can penetrate all surfaces.

3️⃣ Keep in Darkness for Optimal Effect

Store the container in a dark place for the right amount of time:

  • 30 minutes to eliminate snails and parasites.

  • 5 to 12 hours to clear algae growth.

4️⃣ Rinse Thoroughly to Remove CO2 Residue

After soaking, rinse plants well in freshwater before returning them to your tank. This prevents excess CO2 from lingering in the aquarium.

5️⃣ Reintroduce Plants to the Tank

Place the plants back in the aquarium. Any remaining anaerobic organisms will die off in the oxygen-rich environment.

The Carbon Dioxide in Seltzer water kills algae and snails.

Pro Tips:

✔️ Always use freshly opened Seltzer. A flat drink won’t work.

✔️ Never dilute or heat the Seltzer. It reduces CO2 effectiveness.

✔️ Do NOT seal the container. CO2 buildup needs to vent.

✔️ Make sure plants stay submerged. Use weights if necessary.

✔️ Rinse well to prevent any lingering CO2 effects in your tank.

Why Reverse Respiration Works

Snails, algae, and parasites rely on oxygen to survive, while plants thrive on CO2. By creating a high-CO2, oxygen-free environment, pests suffocate while plants remain unharmed.

Tests have shown that this method:

Completely removes pests and eggs.

Eliminates algae within 5-12 hours.

Strengthens plant health, increasing chloroplast activity and pearling.

Why You Should Try Reverse Respiration

Safe for your fish – No toxins or chemical residue.

Fast-acting – Works in under 12 hours.

Improves plant health – Encourages vibrant color and growth.

Simple & cost-effective – Costs less than $1 per treatment.

Reverse respiration is a game-changer for aquarium hobbyists looking for a natural way to keep their tanks pest-free.
