Fins for Grins Guide to Happy and Healthy Fish!

Setting up a fish room is a fun and rewarding experience. Still, it requires specific tools and products to ensure success and to have happy and healthy fish. I've discovered my favorite go-to items that have helped me create and maintain a healthy and beautiful fish room. Here are some of my favorites:

Cleaning Supplies Keeping your tank clean is essential to the health and well-being of your fish. My favorite cleaning supplies are a melamine sponge, white vinegar, and water for glass. The melamine sponge is perfect for stubborn algae. At the same time, the white vinegar and water solution will remove hard water stains and mineral buildup.

Melamine Sponges are a must have in the Fish Room

The melamine sponge is a game-changer for aquarium cleaning. It's made of tiny fibers that scrub dirt and grime without damaging the glass or acrylic. You can use it to clean the inside of the tank, the filter, and other aquarium equipment. Just be sure to rinse it thoroughly before using it in your aquarium. Quick Tip: Don't use the famous brand with the big bald guy. Those have chemicals in them that could harm your fish. White vinegar is another great cleaning agent for your aquarium. It's non-toxic and safe for your fish and plants. When mixed with water, it can remove hard water stains and mineral buildup from your tank's glass, decor, and equipment.

Additives and dechlorinators When setting up a new tank, using the right additives to ensure a healthy environment for your fish and plants is essential. My top picks are Fritz Complete, FritzZyme 7, and Seachem Clarity. Fritz Complete provides a healthy environment for fish and plants, FritzZyme 7 helps establish a beneficial bacterial colony, and Seachem Clarity clarifies water to keep it crystal clear.

Fritz Complete is a concentrated, one-step, full-spectrum water conditioner that detoxifies chlorine, chloramine, heavy metals, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. It also contains a chemical binder that renders ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate non-toxic, allowing your filtration to break down these compounds further.

FritzZyme 7 is a biological stimulant that helps establish a beneficial bacterial colony in your tank. It contains nitrifying bacteria that break down organic waste and convert harmful chemicals into harmless compounds. This helps maintain good water quality and reduces the need for frequent water changes.

Seachem Clarity is a water clarifier that removes small particles and impurities. It's safe for your fish and plants and won't affect the water chemistry. You can use it whenever your water starts to look cloudy or murky.

Substrates Choosing a suitable substrate can make a big difference in the health and well-being of your fish and plants. My favorite substrates are CaribSea's African Cichlid Mix, Fluval Stratum, and Black Diamond Blasting Sand. CaribSea's African Cichlid Mix provides a natural environment for African cichlids. Fluval Stratum is excellent for planted tanks, and Black Diamond Blasting Sand is affordable and effective.

CaribSea's African Cichlid Mix is specially formulated to mimic the natural environment of African cichlids. It contains natural minerals and trace elements that promote healthy fish and plant growth. It also helps maintain a stable pH level, vital for African cichlids. Fluval Stratum is a lightweight substrate that's perfect for planted tanks. It contains essential nutrients that promote plant growth and is porous, allowing for good water circulation. It also helps maintain a slightly acidic pH level, ideal for most aquatic plants.

Black Diamond Blasting Sand is an excellent option if you're on a budget. It's made from coal slag and is chemically inert, meaning it won't affect the water chemistry. It's also heavy enough to anchor plants and won't cloud the water. Just be prepared to wash this substrate so it doesn't add fine particles to your tank.

Lighting Good lighting is crucial for the growth and well-being of your plants. My favorite light for planted tanks is the Fluval 3.0 Plant Light. It provides full spectrum lighting and is customizable with the FluvalSmart app.

The Fluval 3.0 Plant Light uses LED technology to provide high-quality lighting for your plants. It has a full spectrum of colors, including red, blue, and green, which promote photosynthesis and plant growth. It also has adjustable color temperature and intensity, allowing you to customize the lighting to suit your tank's needs.

CO2 Regulator For optimal plant growth, a good CO2 regulator is essential. I recommend the GLA Pro CO2 Regulator for its accuracy and durability. Although CO2 is not necessary, it does make your plants flourish.

The GLA Pro CO2 Regulator is a high-quality regulator designed for precision and durability. It's made from high-quality materials and is designed to last for years. It also has a built-in solenoid valve, which allows you to control the flow of CO2 to your tank. This helps maintain a stable CO2 level and promotes healthy plant growth.

Tank Sizes Choosing the right tank size is essential for the health and happiness of your fish. My favorite tank sizes are 75 gallons, 29 gallons, and 20 gallon long. These sizes offer a good balance between space and ease of maintenance. The 75-gallon tank is excellent for medium to large fish, such as cichlids, angelfish, or larger schools of smaller fish. It provides plenty of swimming space and allows for various decorations and plants.

The 29-gallon tank is a popular choice for beginner and intermediate aquarists. It's a versatile size that can accommodate a variety of fish and plants and is easy to maintain. The 20-gallon long tank is excellent for small to medium-sized fish and plants. Its long, narrow shape makes it perfect for aquascaping and creating attractive underwater landscapes. I like to use this tank for a guppy mutt tank.

Plants Plants not only enhance the beauty of your aquarium but also provide essential oxygen and filtration. My favorite plants are anubias, Subwassertang, and water wisteria. There are many other great plants, but these are easy to care for and thrive in various tank conditions.

Anubias is a slow-growing plant that's perfect for beginners. It's hardy and can thrive in low-light conditions. It's also easy to propagate by dividing the rhizomes and attaching them to rocks or driftwood. Subwassertang is a moss-like plant that's easy to care for and can be used as a carpet or background plant. It provides excellent hiding places for small fish and fry and can be propagated by dividing the clumps. Water wisteria is a fast-growing plant that's perfect for larger tanks. It can reach up to 20 inches in height and provides excellent oxygenation and filtration. It's also easy to propagate by cutting the stems and planting them in the substrate.

Techy Stuff Using technology can make aquarium maintenance more straightforward and more efficient. My favorite techy items are smart outlets and Google Home. Smart outlets allow you to control your aquarium equipment, while Google Home lets you voice-control your lights.

Smart outlets are a great way to automate your aquarium equipment. You can use them to control your lights, heaters, filters, and other equipment, and I prefer to use them to schedule my lights for 6 - 8 hours per day. I recently heard someone talk about using them to help with water changes by turning your pump on and off.

Smart Outlets and a voice assistant make life easy!

Google Home is a voice-activated assistant that can control your aquarium lights. You can set up voice commands to turn the lights on and off, adjust the brightness and color, and more. This can be especially helpful if you have a busy schedule or want to control your aquarium from a distance.

Foods Feeding your fish the right food is crucial for their health and happiness. My favorite foods are Xtreme Aquatic Foods and baby brine shrimp. Xtreme Aquatic Foods offers a wide range of fish foods to meet different fish species' nutritional needs. At the same time, baby brine shrimp is a nutritious and tasty treat.

Xtreme Aquatic Foods offers a wide range of fish foods to meet different fish species' nutritional needs. They're made with high-quality ingredients and contain a balanced mix of proteins, fats, and vitamins. Some of my favorite Xtreme Aquatic Foods include the Krill Flake, the Color Flakes, and the Cichlid Pellets.

Baby brine shrimp is a nutritious and tasty treat for your fish. You can hatch your baby brine shrimp using a brine hatchery kit. These kits typically include a hatchery, eggs, and salt mix, allowing you to hatch your baby brine shrimp at home. Alternatively, you can buy frozen baby brine shrimp from a pet store.

Live baby brine shrimp are a nutritious and high-protein food source for your fish. They're perfect for fry and juvenile fish, as they're small and easy to digest. You can feed them to your fish directly from the hatchery or use a net to transfer them to a separate feeding container.

Fish Lastly, choosing the right fish is essential for creating a thriving fish room. My favorite fish to keep are bettas, guppies, African cichlids, and angel fish. These fish offer various colors, patterns, and behaviors, making them a joy to watch and care for.

Bettas are popular because of their vibrant colors and long, flowing fins. They're also relatively easy to care for and can be kept in smaller tanks. Don't fall for the big box pet store's way of keeping Bettas. They need a decent-sized tank, heater, and filter to live a long, healthy life.

Guppies are another popular fish that come in various colors and patterns. They're social fish and can be kept in schools of six or more. They're also easy to care for and are an excellent choice for beginners. Kids love to watch them and get excited when babies appear in the tank.

Angel fish swimming in a planted tank

Angelfish are known for their elegant appearance and graceful swimming. They come in various colors and patterns and can be kept in groups or as individuals. They're also relatively easy to care for and can be a good choice for intermediate aquarists.

African cichlids are colorful and active fish from Africa's freshwater lakes. They require specific water conditions and can be more challenging to care for. Still, their beauty and personality make them a popular choice for experienced aquarists. Setting up a successful fish room requires the right tools and products. Using my favorite cleaning supplies, chemicals, substrates, lighting, CO2 regulator, tank sizes, plants, techy stuff, foods, and fish, you can create a healthy and beautiful fish room that you and your fish will enjoy. Whether a beginner or an experienced aquarist, these essentials will help you make the perfect underwater world for your aquatic friends. Be sure to like, follow and share for more content.
